The Premier Women played host to defending champions, the Takapuna Ponies last Saturday on Pap's number two pitch with the home side winning the toss and sending the visitors in to bat. Pap's opening pace attack, Feala Vaelua, and Lagi Telea were once again very tidy up front as Telea struck early in her first over sending opener, Toni Baldwin packing for a duck. Taka's first drop, Maddy Probert (17), knuckled down alongside Auckland Heart, Lauren Down to put on a 70-run partnership before Vaelua came back into the attack removing Probert early after first drinks with a sharp catch at short cover by Lily Mulivai.
From that point on, Takapuna were in trouble with Roz McNeill (5) providing a little bit of resistance for the visitors with a 29-run partnership with Down before Pap spinner, Via Meritiana Andrew, came into the attack removing McNeill bowled. Regular wickets continued to fall with Andrew finishing up with a tidy 3-30 off her 10 overs and Regina Lilii contributing at the other end taking 4-15 off her five overs before Telea came back into the attack to take the final crucial wicket of Down (76) to have Takapuna all out in the 36th over for 130.
With 131 runs to win, it was a rocky start for the home side as Takapuna's McNeill ripped through the top order dismissing both openers, Vaelua for a first-ball duck and Tess Hickson (1) in the first over of the innings. Captain, Lelia Bourne followed soon after in the seventh over trapped LBW with McNeill taking her third wicket and the home side in real trouble at 9-3. Lilii (17) and Andrew (8), set about trying to steady the ship with a 26-run partnership before Lilii was dismissed caught in the 16th over and Andrew following closely behind in the very next over and the team in real strife at 35-5 at first drinks.
With the home side needing the middle and lower order to step up under pressure, Lily Mulivai and Telea did just that as they took control of the innings putting on a 34-run partnership before Telea was dismissed caught behind with the team on 69-6 and momentum still going Takapuna's way. However, Maria Tato was not phased by the situation as she joined Mulivai at the crease putting on a crucial 49-run partnership which included a 17-run over off Taka's Claire Mains and ensuring the dangerous McNeill took no further scalps in her remaining overs. With the momentum quickly shifting in favor of the home side, the visitors were still in with a sniff as they dismissed Tato in the 35th over and the team on 118-7.
With 13 runs for victory, Leiu Bourne (9*) and Mulivai cruised to a three-wicket victory in the 38th over and Mulivai finishing up on an unbeaten maiden half-century and match-winning knock of 56 runs off 59 balls which included five fours and one maximum.
The Premier Women now sit in second place with three round robins to go and are at home again this Saturday as they take on top-of-the-table, Unitak. Go well ladies! |
