Premier Men lose first innings on Day One to Takapuna Pirates

Having made Takapuna sweat in their previous encounter, Papatoetoe were unable to repeat their batting display at Onewa Domain.

Papatoetoe batted first and after seeing off the first ten overs without loss, started feeling the pressure from the second ball of Matt Jones’s spell, when he had Josh Plummer caught and bowled for 25.

Although there were plenty of starts on the Papatoetoe scorecard, Jones put paid to them before any batsman made it to 30. When Ross ter Braak took the final two wickets with consecutive balls, Papatoetoe had only made 135 runs.

Takapuna’s Max O’Dowd took 12 off the first over he faced and raced out from there. The Pirates weren’t taking any chances with next week’s weather – they wanted to secure first innings points as soon as possible.

Within 18 overs O’Dowd and Mike Sclanders had done it. When Bupinder Singh bowled out O’Dowd for 63, Jordan Sussex came in and Takapuna continued. By close of play they were scoring at close to seven an over, Sclanders on 93*, Sussex on 48*. Takapuna will restart next week on 232/2.

Papatoetoe 135 (D Bhatti 27, K Yadav 26; M Jones 5-52, R ter Braak 2-16) lost first innings to Takapuna 232/2 (M Sclanders 93*, M O’Dowd 63; D Bhatti 1-26).

Premier Women finish their season with a convincing win over Parnell
Lagi Telea in action at the bowling crease! Photo credit: Phototek
The Premier Women had the very rare opportunity of playing on Papatoetoe's number one on Saturday and were on a mission to make the most of it, and that they did!

Papatoetoe batted first after losing the toss and despite a minor hiccup at the start of their innings (with the loss of an early wicket), some valuable 40 and 80-run partnerships contributed to the team's highest total of the season with 244/8.

With runs on the board, Papatoetoe went out all guns blazing with Lagi Telea and Malia Tato dismissing Parnell's top three batsmen within the first six overs. However, Tetiare Mataora was the pick of the bowlers, coming into the attack at first change and cleaning up the middle order taking 3/20 off her six overs. Taofi Lafai was clinical with the ball, as usual, and chipped in with a tidy 2/8 off her four overs. Mereana Hyde then made light work of the tail taking the last two wickets in 1.5 overs to have Parnell all out for 96 in the 29th over.

Despite an up and down season, our biggest highlight is having our very own Lagi Telea topping the MVP Leaderboard for the entire Premier Women's competition with 352 runs and 23 wickets! Well done Lagi! This is a reflection of all your hard work and commitment not only this season but for the past five seasons, you have been with the Club. We look forward to celebrating your success when you receive the Premier Women's MVP Award at this year's ACA Awards night!

Papatoetoe 244/8 50.0 ov (R Lilii 91, L Telea 33, L Bourne 27); G Lord 3-46)
Parnell 96/10 28.5 ov (T Mataora 3-20, T Lafai 2-8, L Telea 2-12, M Hyde 2-20; S Naidu 26, G Lord 24, L Bassett 15)
