Hedley Howarth Trophy | Round Five
Papatoetoe 321/8 (B Rowland 173*, S Singh 74, D Gunawardene 3-72) drew with Grafton 257/8 (K Ruffell 64, A Edwards 61, N Fletcher 32, N Aujla 4-51)
Grafton kept their survival hopes alive after a gritty batting effort at home against Papatoetoe. The hosts stood up to a committed Papatoetoe attack, batting through the entirety of Day Two to salvage a draw.
The draw, however, may feel like something of a consolation, with Kyle Ruffell (64) and Alex Edwards (61) having put on 109 for the first wicket. The openers patient fifties set Grafton on their way, but the incoming batsmen were unable to capitalise.
Papatoetoe’s Navdeep Aujla (4-51) provided the biggest threat, with the off-spinner striking regularly through the afternoon. Grafton were determined throughout, with only one dismissed batsman facing less than 20 deliveries. With a first-innings lead out of reach, Nathan Fletcher (32) and Jack Duffy (27*) grafted to take crucial time out of the game. Their respective knocks keep Grafton afloat and in touching distance of Papatoetoe with two scheduled rounds remaining.
