Birkenhead break Premier Men's winning streak in the Richard Jones One Day comp

Premier Men

Richard Jones Cup | Round Four

Birkenhead 280/6 (J O’Brien 112*, S Rajwer 58, C Rajapaksha 35, A Prasad 3-38) defeated Papatoetoe 235 (J Plummer 56, L Clark 57, M Masand 4-47, A Frew 3-48) by 45 runs.

Birkenhead went clear at the top of the table on the back of James O’Brien’s unbeaten century. Chamal Rajapaskha (35) and Simon Rajwer (58) contributed knocks of their own but the story of the first innings was O’Brien, who hit 13 boundaries on his way to 112* from just 100 balls. Avnit Prasad’s (3-38) tight bowling ensured Birkenheads total didn’t balloon past the 300 mark, nevertheless Papatoetoe were left with a daunting chase of 280 ahead of them.

Top-order batsmen Josh Plummer (56) and Logan Clark (57) gave Papatoetoe’s chase some early promise, but opening bowlers Mayur Masand (4-47) and Angus Frew (3-48) combined for seven wickets, giving Birkenhead a comfortable 45-run win and a 4-0 Richard Jones Cup record.

DLS Target too much in the end as Premier Men lose T20 Semi-Final to East Coast Bays

T20 Championship | Semi-Final vs East Coast Bays

East Coast Bays 130/7 (C Briggs 35, J Plummer 3-16) defeated Papatoetoe 59/6 by 17 runs (DLS).

Victory over Papatoetoe at Windsor Park will see East Coast Bays get an opportunity to add to their 2012/13 T20 Championship.

Batting first, Bays were made to work for a total. Papatoetoe kept openers Cole Briggs and Ryan Schierhout largely in check as Bays made a run-a-ball start through the powerplay. Briggs (35) forged on before Papatoetoe made the most of their tidy start.

Bays lost wickets in the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th overs as Josh Plummer (3-16) and Avnit Prasad (2-18) helped Papatoetoe seemingly take control of the game. Campbell Knowles (29) then rallied with No. 9 Caleb Gaylard, adding 36 in the final four overs. It was just the finish Bays needed, posting 130/7 from their 20 overs.

Two overs into Papatoetoe’s chase, rain interrupted play but not before Josh van der Sande (2-10) claimed the big wicket of Barrington Rowland. Ten overs had been lost by the time the players returned and, at 13/1, Papatoetoe required a further 64 from the remaining eight overs. Ryan Harrison (2-5) then went bang-bang in the third over and there was no way back for Papatoetoe. Having lost their top-order fireback, Bays snuck through some tight overs to drive the required run-rate up. Logan Clark (29*) fought to keep Papatoetoe alive, but he had little support as Papatoetoe finished 17 runs short of the DLS target of 77.

Premier Women finally off the mark with a win over Cornwall!

Pearl Dawson Trophy | Round Three

Howick Pakuranga 126/7 (R Patel 51, R Lilii 4-14) defeated Papatoetoe 74/6 (R Lilii 32, M Downes 3-10) by 52 runs.

Howick Pakuranga came out on top in the Southern derby with a comprehensive win over Papatoetoe. Radhika Patel led the way with the bat, scoring 51 off 43 balls, hitting four of the five Llamas boundaries. It was Regina Lilii who did the most damage of the Papatoetoe bowlers, finishing with brilliant figures of 4-14 from her four overs.

Chasing 127, Lilii (32) was again going to be key. For Howick Pakuranga, however, all five bowlers combined perfectly to restrict Papatoetoe to 74/6; Marama Downes (3-10) starred, while Molly Penfold, Georgina Harris and Amberly Parr all picked up a wicket and conceded 16 or less from their four overs.

Pearl Dawson Trophy | Round Four

Papatoetoe 133/7 (R Lilii 80*, L Battin 3-28) defeated Cornwall 109/8 by 24 runs.

Papatoetoe are off the mark in season 2020/21 with an excellent win over Cornwall. Regina Lilii hit the highest individual score of the day, finishing with an unbeaten 80 off 63 balls. The opener’s knock was Papatoetoe’s only one to pass double-figures, but it was more than enough to get Papatoetoe to a winning total of 133/7. For Cornwall, Lydia Battin struck thrice through the middle to put the pressure back on Lilii.

The chase started brightly before a string of wickets saw Cornwall slip to 40/4 at the end of the powerplay. Carol Agafili (2-20) and Caitlin Hakeagatoa (2-23) shared the limelight for Papatoetoe, while Tariel Lamb (26) tried to lead a Cornwall rebuild. The solid work up-front proved just the ticket to seal Papatoetoe’s first win of the season, by 24 runs.
