MBT Premier Men lose Outright to Howick Pakuranga after taking First Innings points

Needing 71 with three wickets in hand, Howick Pakuranga’s rearguard resistance didn’t quite last long enough as Papatoetoe secured first-innings points. After a fruitless initial spell, Harshal Vyas (5-29) returned to pick up his fifth and the final Howick Pakuranga wicket.

The hosts, however, didn’t let their deficit of 24 runs hamper aspirations of getting something out of the game, firing up with the ball and hitting back before lunch. Josh Plummer (58) performed a dual role, holding the Papatoetoe innings together and building the visitor’s lead. Adam Jones (3-36) was again in the action, while seamers Donovan Grobbelaar, Jamie Brown and Matt McEwan all unsettled Papatoetoe’s batsmen.

Papatoetoe were eventually bowled out for 161 in their second innings, setting the Alpacas 185 to win. At 23/2, Papatoetoe sniffed an outright of their own. Bill Walsh (38) then combined with Brian Barnard (44) and the pair put the chase on course. The rollercoaster fourth innings rolled on as Bhupinder Singh got both Walsh and Barnard in quick succession.

Singh took a further two, but in the final over of the day, Jones and McEwan saw Howick Pakuranga home by three wickets.

Papatoetoe 144 (R Botadra 4-21) and 161 (J Plummer 58, A Jones 3-36) lost to Howick Pakuranga 121 (B Walsh 31, H Vyas 5-29) and 187/7 (B Barnard 44, B Walsh 38, B Singh 4-58) outright by 3 wickets.

Premier Women on the board after a convincing win over Parnell including Lafai five-for

Papatoetoe are off the mark for the season with a comprehensive eight-wicket triumph over Parnell.

The visitors dominated from the very start and never looked back. Opening bowlers Lily Mulivai and Maliah Tato set the tone, but it was Taofi Lafai who stole the show, taking 5-21. Isabel Mills (32) fought through 90 balls as the hosts were bowled out for 76.

Skipper Regina Lilii (47*) took on the responsibility of guiding the team home, putting on 55 for the second wicket with Kolotita Nonu Lui.

Parnell 76 (I Mills 32, T Lafai 5-21) lost to Papatoetoe 77/2 (R Lilii 47*) by eight wickets.

Papatoetoe and Howick Pakuranga Old Boys go head-to-head in T20 match
Hosts, Howick Pakuranga batted first and posted a very respectable 165/7 off their 20 overs with opening batsman, Podge (a very very young-looking old boy) top-scoring with 110. Regardless of the seven dropped catches (Ronaldson, Plummer, Jamieson, Shaw, and Speedy the culprits) making the magical ton-mark that little bit easier to get to, a hundred's a hundred.

Then batting became very difficult all of a sudden when our innings got underway with Kerry Walmsley and Kyle Mills spearheading Howick's attack. However, Ash Clarke made batting look incredibly easy, as per normal, top-scoring with 35 in our miserly total of 100.

Despite the result, it was great fun to catch up with old foes as well as teammates again so we are looking to make this an annual event.  If there are any past players that are keen to be involved please contact the Club by email papatoetoecricket@kolmar.org.nz or Neil Ronaldson 027 355 862.
