ACA Report

Takapuna put themselves in to bat at Onewa Domain and produced a fairly complete team batting performance to make 276/9. Seven players scored between 20 and 50. While Takapuna would obviously have liked more players to go on to a big score, the final total should have given the Pirates a comfortable win.

Logan Clarke wasn’t going to have that, however. Coming in when Papatoetoe was in trouble at 12/2, he hit nine fours and four sixes in his 129 from 112 balls. Along with Navdeep Aujla, Papatoetoe put on 131 runs for the sixth wicket. Rocketing along into the 45th over, Takapuna Captain Will O’Donnell took two crucial wickets – Clarke stumped on the first ball and then Mick Hosking on the last. Aujla hit a six to bring up his 50 next over, but was then run out. With seven runs needed form the last over, and two tailenders in, it was going to be a tough ask for Papatoetoe. They finished at 271 all out, five runs short.

Takapuna 276/9 50 ov (D Janes 48*, S Setia 46; N Aujla 3-48, M Hosking 2-42, H Vyas 2-55) defeated Papatoetoe 271/10 49.4 ov (L Clark 129, N Aujla 53; W O'Donnell 3-46, D James 2-34) by five runs.

Match 1 vs Parnell

After losing the toss and being thrown in to bat on a green Te Atatu number three, Papatoetoe struggled to get any real momentum with both openers out within the powerplay and the team on 2-18 off five overs. Lily Mulivai (23) and Kolotita Nonu Lui (15*) managed to steady the ship momentarily before a running mix-up saw Mulivai run out in the 13th over. Feala Vaelua helped finish off the innings alongside Nonu Lui with a 14-run cameo to help the team to 100/7 off their 20 overs.

In the field, Papatoetoe's bowlers, in particular, Mulivai, Vaelua and Lagi Telea taking early wickets to dismiss Parnell's top four within the first seven overs with none of the top four scoring more than two runs. Vaelua was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-16 off her four overs with Mulivai (1/8) and Telea (1/9) chipping in with one wicket each.

Papatoetoe 100/7 (L Mulivai 23, K Nonu Lui 15*; S Brake 2-25) defeated Parnell 62/5 (I Mills 21*; F Vaelua 2/16, L Mulivai 1/8, L Telea 1/9) by 38 runs.

Match 2 vs Unitak

The luck of the draw (again) saw Papatoetoe on the number one pitch in the second T20 but this time at Te Atatu and against home side, Waitakere/Auckland University (Unitak). After losing the toss once again and being thrown in to bat, some tight bowling from Unitak saw a frustrated Lily Mulivai go out stumped in the fourth over with the team on 1-14. First drop, Kolotita Nonu Lui joined Regina Lilii (38) at the crease where they put on a 50-run partnership before some sharp fielding at point by Unitak's Jesse Prasad saw Lilii dismissed in the 14th over. Late cameos from Feala Vaelua (15) and Lagi Telea (13) alongside an unbeaten 24 from Nonu Lui helped the team to 108 off their 20 overs.

Up against a strong batting line-up featuring White Fern, Anna Peterson, Papatoetoe needed early wickets. However, Unitak openers, Kate Anderson and Peterson took a liking to Papatoetoe's pace attack dispatching eight boundaries within the powerplay. A change in pace saw Taofi Lafai come into the bowling attack bringing an end to Peterson's quick-fire 30 runs off only 16 balls after mistiming one in the sixth over to go out caught with the team on 52. Another bowling change saw Papatoetoe youngster, Hannah Burns (1/18) take the wicket of first-drop, Jesse Prasad (12) bowled and Tetiare Mataora dismissing opener, Anderson (29) caught in the 13th over. Unfortunately, no further wickets fell with Sam Curtis (26*) and Maddy Cooke (4*) seeing Unitak through to 109 in the 17th over.

Papatoetoe 108/4 (R Lilii 38, K Nonu Lui 24*, F Vaelua 15) lost to Unitak 109/3 (H Burns 1-18, T Mataora 1-20, T Lafai 1-22) by nine wickets.
