Level Two from the General Manager's Desk

Afternoon All,

This week we move to Level Two-Covid response. While it seems relatively straightforward, there will be some conditions around the use of the Kolmar building and Indoor Centre that will be in place to safeguard all the facility users that will need to be followed. Kolmar Management are meeting on Wednesday to brief their staff on what that means. The Club is taking advice from Auckland Council and Auckland Cricket and will communicate that to Centre management but ultimately the decisions and process will sit with the Kolmar Board and staff.

For the Cricket Club, the main consideration will be the booking and use of the Indoor Centre.

At this stage, access will only be through the front door and past Reception. For casual or individual bookings, the Centre will only be accessible if a Kolmar staff member is operating the front desk. Those hours will be set by Kolmar Management this week and will be in the newsletter next week.

The Club will be confirming its own booking for the off-season this week. This will be for winter programs and off and preseason squad training, not for individuals or small private groups, irrespective if they are members or not.

If you are intending to make a booking or bookings in the next few weeks, please email me your request at; and I will work with Kolmar Operations to do the best we can to meet your request.

Keep in mind the charge per member for a private booking is $15 per hour, per lane.

Coaching qualification courses for coaches will be available in Term 3 from July 20. Keep your eye out in the newsletter or on the website for information regarding dates etc. and we will get you on a suitable course.

The Club is running an appeal requesting donations. It is no secret that the months from March until subs collection in September are very low in income stream options. That is especially so at the moment without gaming machine Trust support or sponsorship income. On the other side, there is no question now that NZ Cricket and Auckland Cricket are putting the burden to operate twelve months of the year. The Club is appealing for donations. Please consider the request as one of the key areas that the Club needs to strengthen is fundraising. We do our best to keep subscriptions at a very affordable level, but we do need income to meet all our commitments. Every little bit helps and it is tax-deductible.

This Saturday I will be at the Centre from 10 am -12 noon. I would like all the Club gear that is currently held by Club members to be returned at that time so I can hold a stocktake and assess what will be needed for next season. If you do have any of our gear can you text (021607537) or email me beforehand and I will arrange a time to meet you at the Club to return it back to us.

Thank you.

Garry Wood,
Club Manager
Papatoetoe Cricket Club

Would you like to contribute to the Club with a tax-deductible donation?
Did you know that we are a registered charity at both the Charities Commission and the IRD? This means that for any donation made to the Club of $5 or more, an individual can claim a tax rebate at the end of the financial year.

The IRD pays out 33.33 cents for every dollar you donate to charities or similar organisations. The total you can claim in one tax year is the lesser of 33.33% of your total donations or 33.33% of your taxable income.

So, if you would like to support your local Club and are keen to get a tax rebate, donations can be made to bank account number: 12-3044-0287262-52

Once you make a donation please email and we will arrange to send you a tax receipt as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support!

Meet some of our Most Influential Club People: Gary Troup

Photo: Gary Troup steaming in for the Black Caps against India at the Basin Reserve in February 1981 (also feat. umpire, Steve Woodward)

1964, I joined as an 11-year-old when we first moved to Fenton St, Papatoetoe. Played juniors under the tutelage of Aldred Irvine & Jack Swaffield. Selected for Southern Districts reps, played at Hobson Park. Made the Auckland rep team that played in NI Tournament at Hutt Rec. Lifetime at the Papatoetoe Rec Ground from then on.

  1. My Dad – Basil. Always happy to help in so many ways. Great Club man too. And my Mum, of course.
  2. My mates – esp from Aorere College. W Cummins, A McLaughlin, S Dillon, R Collins, S Watt +++
  3. The Club & many therein. First Premier game under Tony Timpson, outstanding leader & player. Overawed to be in such a quality side – Harris/Gedye opening the batting, Sutton/Cunis opening the bowling.

Meeting & playing with some great people. The Club was a huge influence in those days. Quality coaching – Gedye, Harris, Sutton, Cunis +++. Always great to go back & play for Papatoetoe.

Great environment on & off the field. Winning championships. Club spirit taught me pride, dedication, be humble, respect, enjoy the game.

Many but those that come to mind:

  • Club – v Cornwall 7 wickets incl hattrick, last 6 for 3 runs.
  • First-Class – debut v CD. Batting at 10, went in on hattrick, scored 57. Bowling – 6 wkts v Canterbury at Eden Park to win game.
  • International – Test v West Indies at Eden Park, 10 wickets. Plus last-wicket stand to win Test in Dunedin.

Richard Hadlee – without doubt the greatest player, worldwide, of my generation. That is saying something given the quality of other players around the world at the time. I played with Richard for NZ, and against him when Auckland played Canterbury.

From a Club perspective, there were many but Noel Burnside stood out as the ultimate Club player. Outstanding talent, never-say-die attitude, positive and inspirational leader. Also Bill Athey (Rng Prof), outstanding player & mate.

The Harris/Gedye opening partnership. The Sutton/Cunis opening bowling partnership. Both ‘world-class’ at Club level. Records speak for themselves.

Many, but at Club level, stand out was Bob Cunis. Others close behind, Roger Harris, Denis Currie, Wally Stamp, Earl Greathead, Allen McLaughlin, Smudge McNeilage, John Wright, Gary Peach to name a few ! Off the field Nigel Hurst outstanding humorist, speaker & great club man. Plus Bas Troup, Ian Plummer, Gerry Green, David Price, Peter Boyd +++
