Level 2 from the GM's Desk

Things are starting to get back on track as Kolmar opens for limited cricket activity. There are a couple of points here with regards to the situation with booking the Indoor Centre. Kolmar manages the facility on behalf of the Club. Please be patient with Kolmar staff especially in tricky times as they manage the rules around covid19. It is not easy and they are doing their best. That means the conditions of use are largely set by Kolmar and we are obliged to follow their direction in all Health and Safety rules.

Kolmar also charge for facility use including the indoor centre. As part of that trade-off, Kolmar pay Reception staff and cover insurance, rates, and other ground and facility charges such as maintenance. That is why we have a brand new surface in the indoor centre. Commercial users pay $30 per lane. Club members pay $15 per lane per hour so receive a significant discount to use top quality cricket practice facilities. The Club is entitled to book times for Club use, but that is a balancing act, as we must allow Kolmar times to gain some income to pay the bills to keep these amazing training facilities up to standard for us, the members.

A decision is pending on the confirmed AGM date and time. The plan is to hold both junior and senior prizegivings on the same day, one after the other, and then followed by the AGM. To do that we need to see what the Government releases this afternoon on group gatherings and allowed numbers. I will have a date for you all next week.

It is hoped that there will be a significant announcement about the emergence of a cricket Academy at Kolmar. Talks are well advance with two to three high profile members of the cricket community to make this happen, so, also, more news next week on that front.

In preparation for next season, you might want to upskill yourself with either a coaching or scoring course. Keep your eye out in the newsletter and on the website to see what these will be happening at the Club.

Please take the time to read the newsletter and check the website and Facebook page. Regina does a great job in keeping, you, the members well informed, and up to date. Take the time to read about the various Club members we are including brief bios from. This week is from VJ Soma or Vij, the ultimate Clubman. He is the sort of member that makes Clubs work.

All the best,

Garry Wood

Meet some of our Most Influential Club People: Vijay Soma

Photo: Vijay pictured here third from the left in the back row in an All Stars PCC Indian team who played against an All Stars Rest of PCC Team when Kolmar first opened in 2011.
When did you start playing cricket and where?
Far too long ago to remember!  But 1983 is when I joined Papatoetoe Cricket Club after my Primary School teacher introduced me to Mr. Derek McKeen, my first junior coach.

Tell us a bit about your playing career?
I have always been at Papatoetoe CC, although I did jump ship and play at Takapuna for a couple of seasons. It was always tough as a left-arm orthodox spinner playing Premier Cricket in the late '90s, early 2000s, growing up and playing with the likes of club fast bowling legend's such as Neil Ronaldson, Jamie Graham, Gareth, and Lance Shaw and Gareth Wood, we pretty much had a first-class fast bowling attack that all clubs would fear. Having the odd over before lunch was an honor back in those days!
However, I did play a solid 10+ seasons of Premier cricket at Papatoetoe and had the honor of playing Auckland age-group cricket.

Highlights, good memories, championships, etc.
Best memory was making my Premier Debut at 17 years of age, with the likes of Simon and Mark Petersen and Mark Bradley, Neil Ronaldson, I managed to snag a 2-Fa against Kumeu at Home on the No.1. The next best highlight was being part of the 2000 - 2003 Premier Team, we basically won promotion to the top 8 and went back to back and secured the Premier Championship that next season. That team was feared by most teams around Auckland Cricket.  Also playing with a great bunch of good mates during this time made it so much more satisfying.

Who has been some of the more interesting characters you have met at Papatoetoe or playing against?
There are too many to mention, Herb Plummer, Guy Ronaldson, Rose Weir, Troupy, Dave Dowling and OB are some of the old brigade I have huge amounts of respect for. Not forgetting Mr. Nigel Hurst, who always looked after me as a junior coming up through the ranks. My First senior grade men's skipper, Switz was and still is a great influence on me. Out of the current crop, Bhup Singh is a man I have time for, he is true Papatoetoe man and just keeps giving.

Why do you still play?
Pretty simple really, apart from The Rec being my second home, I want to be around to see this club bustling again, I want to help build it to be where it should be and help the next gen to understand what the Papatoetoe Way is all about and then see them succeed week in, week out.
