HOW DID I GET INVOLVED?
Think I might have been born there!!!! Dad moved to Papatoetoe from Wellington in the early 50s and became involved in all aspects of the club from then to this day where he is still the patron, so my childhood like many others was spent growing up at the Rec.
Winning two Championships was huge as so many go through careers without one. Our centenary season was also very special and to still be playing and to celebrate it in the old clubrooms was magic.
OUTSTANDING CRICKET EXPERIENCES
Winning the Auckland Cricketer of the Year 3 years in a row as well as being leading wicket-taker in Auckland for two seasons, and two Premier hat-tricks.
Being selected for the NZ Over 50s team for the 2020 O50s World Cup in Cape Town and getting to sing the national anthem was pretty surreal…..at 50!!
Tom Hellaby to me was the ultimate club player with bat, ball, in the field, and as captain. Mark Bradley, Simon Peterson, and Shane Singe were close seconds. Simon Poole was a very underestimated player who scored consistently over many seasons. Our pace bowling quartet of Gareth Shaw, Gareth Wood, Jamie Graham, Lance Shaw wouldn’t have looked out of place in many First Class sides.
