Hedley Howarth Trophy | Round Seven

Papatoetoe 259 (L Clark 95, L Istead 84, L Ferguson 3-40, J Parsons 3-40) and 249 (S Setia 121*, J Fisher 4-73) lost to Parnell 283/6 dec. (A Parikh 112*, A Lane 36, F McGregor-Sumpter 36) and 227/2 (B Rae 124*, A Lane 68) by eight wickets.

Parnell knew two things. One, that they needed University to do them a favour. Two, that they would need to force an outright win to have any chance if Suburbs were to falter.

Parnell seal first-innings points and bat through to 283/6 before declaring. With Suburbs New Lynn wobbling in the morning session, the Peaches advance the game as Aniket Parikh finishes unbeaten on 112 off 101 balls.

Papatoetoe show a mix of aggression and determination, batting around Shane Setia (121*). Parnell progress the game by taking wickets at the other end, but Setia threatens to put the game out of reach for Parnell.

It was a slow and steady start for Parnell, but eventually Ben Rae and Andy Lane found the bowling to their liking. The pair put on 156 for the second wicket to put Parnell in firm control.

Parnell completes the outright victory by eight wickets. Rae finished unbeaten on 124 off 111 balls, while Lane’s 68 took him to 1180 runs for the season. Parnell had done what they could to put the pressure back on Suburbs.

Prichard Cup | Finals Round

Papatoetoe 92 (R Lilii 53, A Eastwood 4-27, M Templeton 4-32) lost to Auckland University 95/4 (K Gurrey 31) by six wickets.

Auckland University finished the season with a comfortable win over Papatoetoe and Colin Maiden Park.

Regina Lilii proved the only Papatoetoe player to stand up to the University attack. Lilii (53) scored more than half her side’s total of 92, batting through the inning and being the last to be dismissed. For University, both Alex Eastwood and Makayla Templeton took four wickets as Papatoetoe were all out inside 30 overs.

University’s chase was a routine one, with Katie Gurrey hitting 7 fours in her 31 off 22 balls. While the hosts’ middle-order wobbled somewhat, there wasn’t much left to do from there and University sealed victory in the 14th over with six wickets in hand.

Congrats Caitlin and Davinya on your success in last week's Gillette Venus Qualifying Tournament

Gillette Venus Cup | Auckland Qualifiers 2021

Last week, nine schools took part in the Gillette Venus Regional Qualifiers for Auckland. The tournament started with two Pools; Westlake Girls, Mt Albert Grammar, Takapuna Grammar, St Kentigern and Mt Roskill Grammar battled it out in Pool A, while Epsom Girls, Baradene College, Glendowie College and Diocesan faced off in Pool B.

Final | Epsom Girls vs. Baradene College

Excellent spells by Epsom’s opening duo Breearne Illing and Christelle McGuire set the tone early on. Both openers finished with figures of 2-11 from their 4 overs before Caitlin Hakeagatoa (2-13) helped Epsom restrict Baradene to 67/8 from their 20 overs. Wicketkeeper Amity Drake was the top-scorer for Baradene with 20.

Epsom’s chase faced an early wobble when Isabelle O’Connell and Issy Gerrand struck in the opening two overs. At 7/2, Illing joined Lydia Battin and the pair put on an unbeaten 62-run third-wicket stand to take Epsom to an eight-wicket victory in the 10th over.

Playoff for Third | Mt Albert Grammar vs. Westlake Girls

Mt Albert’s Davinya Lulia played the innings of note, helping her side to a defendable total. Lulia hit 5 fours on her way to 43 off 33, finding enough support from the middle order to challenge Westlake Girls. For Westlake, Leah Watton was the standout with the ball, finishing her four overs with 2-13 as Mt Albert posted 114/8.

Chasing 115, Westlake were in a strong position when Brooke James (35*) and Nelita Pistorius were together. When the second-wicket stand came to an end, Mt Albert put the squeeze on to lift the required run-rate. One final push saw Westlake come within four runs of victory, but it was to be Mt Albert who claimed third place.

Epsom Girls Grammar School will now represent Auckland at the Gillette Venus Cup National Tournament later this year.
