Jerry Green 99 and peacefully retired after an outstanding innings
George Henry Mills (Jerry) Green passed away peacefully at St Christopher's Private Hospital on the 24th September 2019; aged 99 years. Jerry Green was a Life Member and long-time supporter of Papatoetoe Cricket Club, and is well respected and loved by all who were associated with him in the wider community. A service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at the Manukau Memorial Gardens at 12.30pm on Friday, 27th September, followed by tea/coffee in the Bob White Room on site. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Rest in peace Jerry.
Jerry Green Street
Jerry Green Street Over the last few years there has been considerable change in and around Papatoetoe in connection with the electrification of the railway and the development of State Highway 20 extension. As a result Roscommon Road was severed in two parts. One part was renamed Noel Burnside Road, in recognition of the services of the Burnside family to the Papatoetoe community. The other part was renamed Jerry Green Street after the former Town Clerk of the Papatoetoe City Council, for his many contributions to the Papatoetoe Community.
Jerry was born George Henry Mills Green (known as Jerry) on 20 March 1920 in Leicester, England. He had one older brother and sister. While at school Jerry enjoyed sport playing in a number of codes like cricket, hockey and soccer. He passed his Cambridge School Certificate (equivalent to University Entrance in New Zealand).

On 30 March 1939 Jerry boarded one of the NZ Shipping Company vessel’s the ‘Rotorua’ for New Zealand. He arrived on 12 May 1939. His first job was on a farm in the Waikato. World War II saw Jerry enlisting in the NZ Air Force in 1941 and later transferring to the NZ Army. He was part of the Tank Brigade and went overseas in 1943 where he served in the Italian Campaign. Jerry returned to New Zealand in early 1946 and by the March had started work as a cashier for the Raglan County Council and thus began his career in local government.
On 1 June that year Jerry married Betty Margaret Gee at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Hamilton. They were married 52 years at the time of her death in December 1998. Betty enjoyed her home and being involved in the Mangere Franklyn Garden Club, Papatoetoe Spinning & Weaving Club as well as delivering Meals on Wheels.

In January 1949 Jerry became Town Clerk, Treasurer, Returning Officer at the Ngaruawahia Borough Council.

In June 1958 he was appointed Assistant Town Clerk, Papatoetoe Borough Council. Then in 1967 he was promoted to Town Clerk, Papatoetoe City Council where he remained until his retirement in 1980. While Town Clerk, Jerry was also the secretary to the Papatoetoe Licensing Trust. Following his retirement Jerry undertook some freelance work assisting various local bodies.
Throughout his working life Jerry was actively involved in a number of community organisations where he also held office, like the Papatoetoe Cricket Club, Returned Services Association, Counties Manukau Age Concern, foundation member Papatoetoe Men’s Probus now the Papatoetoe Combined Probus Club.

In 1953 he became a Justice of the Peace. All this community work resulted in a number of awards being presented like:
  • Justice of the Peace-(Honorary membership of the Auckland Association)-In recognition of meritorious and long service in public life and as a JP.
  • 1990 Papatoetoe Returned Services Association (Life Member)
  • 1994 NZ Returned Services Association (Certificate of Merit and M Badge)
  • Age Concern Counties Manukau (Honorary Life Membership)
  • Papatoetoe Cricket Club (Life Membership) 2007 Queens Service Medal (QSM)
Jerry is a great example of living ‘life to the full’.
