Samoan language week and Kilicricket!

Just prior to and through the course of the recent Samoan Language week, Papatoetoe Cricket Club delivered several sessions of modified Kilikiti to various schools in Auckland. Much of the traditional aspect of the sport was explained to the students as a way in which Samoan people relate to their community and culture through Kilikiti, emphasizing language, community traditions, actions, and traditions. All in all, the participants seemed to really enjoy the experiences with loads of laughing and cheering a feature of each session.
Early in the week, the coaching squad from the Club went to Glenavon Primary School in Blockhouse Bay. Day one was a rotation of classes across four skill stations, followed on day two by a game of Kilicricket.
On Thursday the coaches went to Ferguson Intermediate for a class-by-class game experience. Six classes were given a short modified game experience combining Kilikiti and cricket using traditional Kilikiti bats and softer balls.
On Friday the squad went to Three Kings Primary in Mt Eden where a game was played between two teams for the senior school. The teams all wore traditional lava and had a fantastic game, accompanied by traditional chants and cheering for staff, students, and parents.
